Please note I Peter 5:1-3 is referencing Elders in the Church. Shelle chose to reference this verse because as God references marriage as a reflection of the Church, elders are leaders of the church much like husbands are leaders of the marriage. God cautions the Elders to lead well, much like in Ephesians 5:25-33 cautions husbands to lead well. It is for this reason that Shelle makes the analogy between the Elder and the Husband.

So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: 2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; 3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock.
